DEATH FROM INJURIES. (Per United Press Association.) * Auckland, July 22. Henry Haskett, aged 73, a resident of Grey Lynn, was knocked down by a motor car at 9.30 on Saturday evening and died in hospital on Sunday. The car was driven by F. E. Vogwill, a dairyman, living at Mount Roskill. Haskett sustained injuries to his head. A FATAL FALL. Auckland, July 19. As the result of a fall from the gangway of the steamer Mahia to-night, a fireman, Frederick Stanford, aged 33, sustained injuries from which he died in the ambulance on the way to the Auckland hospital. It is not known how he came to fall into the water. Deceased was following two companions up the gangway of the Mahia when they suddenly heard a dull thud, followed by a splash. They then saw deceased in the water between the vessel and the wharf and immediately rescued him. He was then unconscious. Artificial respiration proved unavailing. It is believed deceased struck the base of his skull on a pile and that his neck was broken. Deceased was married with children, living in England. MAORI WORKER KILLED. Wairoa, July 20. A well-known Maori named Rangi Brown, married, aged 40, was killed while working in the Public Works quarry at Opoutama on the Wairoa-Gisborne railway construction works late yesterday afternoon. Deceased was engaged in firing shots high up on the slope when a large piece of rock fell from above and hit him on the head, Brown falling to the bottom of the quarry. The shot then occurred bringing down a fall,of earth and covering the unfortunate man. When removed Brown was found’ to be dead, having evidently been killed by the rock. WIDOW’S SUICIDE. Christchurch, July 22. A widow, Matilda Morgan, aged 68, was found dead at the residence of her niece in Cornwall street, St. Albans, on Sunday afternoon. The body lay in the bathroom of the house with a deep wound in the throat. At the inquest to-day, evidence was given that Mrs Morgan took afternoon tea, left her niece and went to the bathroom. A search was made for her after only a few minutes and she was found lying dead. A verdict of suicide while of unsound mind was returned.
