TIMBER DISPUTE
WORK FOR TEN THOUSAND MEN.
MASTER BUILDERS’ SUGGESTION.
Melbourne, May 11
Appealing to the Premier, Sir William McPherson, to settle the dispute as it affected the building industry', a deputation from the Melbourne Master Builders’ Association gave assurances that if the men were willing to return to work under a guarantee of continuity of service the association would undertake to find employment for 10,000 builders’ operatives on Monday. This number represents an increase of 25 per cent, on the number employed before the trouble began. It was also indicated that there was a likelihood that work would be found for an additional 4000 within a week.—Australian Press Association. LABOUR LEADERS SUMMONED. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, May 12. Summonses have been issued against four Labour leaders—Mr Garden, Secretary of the Labour Council Disputes Committee, Mr Kavanagh, chairman, Mr Reeve, a member and Mr Ryan—for participating in a demonstration at Darlinghurst Court when a number of timber strikers were summoned to return to work.—Australian Press Association.
