MOTOR ACCIDENT

VAN HITS HORSE RIDER SUSTAINS SEVERE INJURIES ANIMAL MORTALLY WOUNDED (Per United Press Association.) Napier, June 27. An extraordinary motor accident in which Fred Pipe of Hastings, a butcher, had both legs broken besides suffering minor injuries, occurred in Karamu road, Hastings, at about 5 o’clock this afternoon. The vehicle involved was a light van owned by the Central Hawkes Bay Power Board and driven by Samuel Haughton. Besides the injuries to Pipe, four sheep and a dog belonging to him were killed and the horse he was riding so badly hurt that it had to be destroyed. Apparently the van driver slewed out to overtake a motor cyclist and did not notice anything ahead. The sheep and the dog were hit first and killed instantaneously and then the horse was knocked over and fell with Pipe. A report from the Napier Hospital states that Pipe’s condition is satisfactory. The van was considerably battered but the driver escaped unhurt.
