GORE CATHOLIC CLUB

IMPROMPTU SPEECHES. Interest in the Gore Men’s Catholic Club this season is being well maintained, and the average attendances are higher than they have been in previous years. On Tuesday Mr J. J. Casey presided over a good attendance of members, despite coun-ter-attractions taking a number away. The evening was devoted to impromptu speeches, and the value of the club as a means of developing the expression of thought was amply testified in the quality and lucidity of the speeches given. The subjects chosen gave ample scope for the speakers, each of whom acquitted himself creditably. The following were the speakers and their respective subjects: Mr A. H. Smith, “Is the present tour of the All Blacks of any value to New Zealand, and is the interest therein greater than the tour warrants?”; Mr J. McGrath, “Is the Singapore base of sufficient naval protection for New Zealand?”; Mr D. O’Neill, “Are retail prices too high in comparison to the average wage?”; Mr J. D. Kerr, “Have New Zealanders too much national conceit?”; Mr J. Cooney, “Is taxation too high in relation to the cost of living in New Zealand?”; Mr M. Collins, “Is men’s respect for women declining in the present age?” Keen argument followed some of the speeches, and at the conclusion the chairman criticized the matter brought forward and complimented the speakers. At the next meeting the debate will be held on: “Is the Government handling the unemployment issue to the best advantage?”
