RIFLE SHOOTING

DEFENCE MINIATURE CLUB. OPENING NIGHT. Last night a large attendance of riflemen was present at the Drill Hall for the opening night of the newly formed Defence Miniature Rifle Club which has been formed in conjunction with the present Defence Club. The plan of the club is to hold shooting meetings every Wednesday night and also to form a ladies’ club in connection with it. Ladies’ clubs are very popular all over New Zealand and it is hoped that similar clubs will be formed all over Southland. Dr. A. F. R. Crawford, the president of the club, spoke to a Times reporter of the immense amount of help the Defence Department, particularly Major McHugh and his staff, had given to the club in preparing the Drill Hall for the purpose. INVERCARGILL-MATAURA MATCH. J. A. MUNRO SCORES POSSIBLE. On the Otatara Range yesterday afternoon the Invercargill and the Mataura Rifle Clubs held a friendly match under rather varying conditions when some good performances were put up. Seven shots with one optional sighter were fired at 500, 600 and then at 300 yards, the last mentioned range being finished in a failing light. A fish-tail wind and an uncertain light hampered the shooting particularly at the longest range.

The Mataura Club was leading by 8 points when the 600 yard range was finished —609 against 601 points for the two ranges. They dropped 24 points at the tricky 300 yards range, shooting in a failing light, and scoring 267 points against the local club’s 291, making a total for the day of 876 points for Mataura against 891 for Invercargill. Lieutenant J. A. Munro, the Mataura veteran, with an “inner” for a sighter, scored a seven-shot possible at 500 yards—the first, it is said, that has been, obtained on the range. In the evening the visiting team was entertained at dinner. The following are the results:— INVERCARGILL.
