SPECIAL BATING AREA

MEETING AT OHAI. f (From Our Correspondent.) A public meeting of ratepayers was held at Ohai on Monday evening when 50 were present to consider the creation of a special rating area. Mr W. J. A. McGregor, member for Wairaki riding on the Wallace County Council, presided, while Messrs J. G. C. Baker (county engineer) and G. B. Burns (county clerk) were also in attendance. The necessary procedure to constitute a special rating area was briefly outlined by Mr Burns, who said there were 119 dwellings in the area, with a capital rateable value of £26,800, which with the maximum rate allowed for any special rate of |d. in the £, would yield £B3 per annum for sinking fund, interest, etc., for each rate struck, Estimates were also given of the cost per dwelling to establish a sanitary and refuse service.

The temporary scheme for drainage was explained by Mr Baker, who recommended that a more comprehensive scheme be considered with a view to catering for future progress, and in which an amount of £4OOO would be involved. The engineer also gave estimates of the cost of erection of street lights and the annual upkeep of same. The plan of the proposed rating area included all the Ohai subdivision and extension of small sections to date from the Linton tips to Mr McLean’s subdivision.

A general discussion took place, the trend of opinion being that it would be a forward move to introduce these facilities. Mr H. Ferguson moved and Mr D. Cameron seconded: “That the present subdivisions of Ohai township and extensions de defined as the special rating area.” Mr R. R. Eastman moved and Mr J. J. H. McLean seconded: “That a modification of a part of the comprehensive scheme for drainage be prepared as a report, and an estimate secured.” Mr H. Ferguson moved and Mr Russell seconded: “That if the special rating area be gazetted in due course the sanitary and refuse removal services and street lighting system be proceeded with.”

The resolution were agreed to and it was also decided that a further meeting to consider the question be held on Monday July 2.
