HOKONUI CLUB. REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. REVIEW OF YEAR’S WORK. The following is the annual report of the Hokonui Bowling Club for the past season:—

Members had a good season’s play, the weather during the year being very favourable to the game of bowls. The inauguration of daylight saving was also a great boon to the bowling fraternity, and we hope to see the measure repeated this year. Altogether, the 1927-28 season of the Hokonui Club has proved one of the most enjoyable yet experienced. The green was in a much-improved playing condition during the past season, owing to the fact that our old trouble with the worms was remedied and the playing area is getting better grassed. The greenkeeper (Mr W. Irvine) is to be congratulated on the successful work he carried out The finances of the club, as a perusal of the balance-sheet will disclose, are in a very satisfactory position.

During the year a heavy roller for use on the green was secured, and this no doubt made a great difference to the playing surface. As members are aware, the dub recently purchased a larger pavilion, which is at present in course of erection on the property. Your committee hopes to have the same completed before the opening of the 1928-1929 season. The new pavilion should prove a boon to members of the club, as the old building had proved too small for the increased membership. Being a two-storeyed building, there will be plenty of room in the new pavilion for years to come, while the club will be able to go ahead with the social room upstairs, in which it is proposed to instal a full-size billiard table as finances permit. All costs up to the present in connection with the new building have been paid out of the finances. The old pavilion has been disposed of to the Eastern District Hockey Association at a satisfactory figure, and a cheque for same will be received when the association takes possession of the building. The club competitions during the past season were carried out most satisfactorily, this being due to the fact that all competitions were started earlier. A word of praise is due to the members for their co-operation with the committee in getting their matches played. The singles championship was again won by Mr W. Irishman, whose play was very consistent throughout the season. Mr A. D. Crawford was the runner-up. In the handicap doubles Messrs A. H. Smith and E. Terry (s.) were successful, Messrs R. Milne and I. W. Martin (s) gaining second honours. - The colts’ singles championship provided an interesting competition and was won by Mr T. Brockett with Mr H. Doreen as run-ner-up. This competition unearthed some very promising players, who should prove a great asset to the club in the future. A handicap singles competition was inaugurated this year, and after keen competition was won by Mr I. W. Martin, the run-ner-up being Mr W. Leishman. A notable feature of the play was the splendid showing of the younger members, Mr D. Tait reaching the semi-final after playing very consistent bowls. The club ran a rink competition to decide who should represent it for the Baker Shields, and after some interesting games this was won by Messrs R. Milne, A. Yates, A. Scott and A. W. Thomson (s.), who represented the club in the final games held on the Gore green. The Crawford Cup was played for this season in progressive doubles, the matches taking place towards the end of the season. Your committee still hopes to extend this competition over the whole playing season, and the co-operation of members is solicited in this respect. The winners this year were Messrs R. Milne and H. Johnston (s.), the runners-up being Messrs H. Cuttriss and W. Leishman. (s.).

The balance-sheet showed the receipts to be £l7l 13/11 and the payments £155 11/1, being a credit balance of £l6 2/10.
