FARMERS’ UNION. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Mataura branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Coronation Hall on Saturday. Mr A. Coombes (president), occupied the chair. Mr L. McVicar w T as elected a member of the branch. The provincial secretary forwarded a cheque for capitation for £4.—Received. The provincial secretary wrote, stating that on behalf of the Mataura branch a lecture by Mr McGillivray, Agricultural Instructor, had been advertised, the branch’s proportion of the cost being £1 16/3. Held over in the meantime.
A remit, brought up at the last executive meeting at Invercargill concerning the alteration of the position of the tail lights on vehicles, was discussed, the opinion of members being that the position of the tail lights made no material difference provided it was somewhere near the centre of the chassis at the rear of a vehicle. Further it was considered that the additional expense incurred in altering the position of the light was not warranted in view of the heavy taxation already imposed on motorists. It was decided that the next meeting of the branch be held on July 27, the meeting to take the form of a social evening. Mr Coombes kindly offered the use of his barn for the occasion. PERSONAL. Mr E. A. Downes, of Mataura, was a passenger to Dunedin by yesterday afternoon’s express.
