POLICE COURT
YESTERDAY’S SITTING. In the Police Court yesterday morning before Mr G. Cruickshank S.M., a lengthy .list of by-law cases was set down for hearing. John Alexander Shanks, who pleaded guilty, was charged with cutting the corner at the intersection of Oteramika Road and Elies Road on March 29 and with driving a motor lorry negligently. In outlining the facts for the prosecution Senior-Sergeant Fox asked that a conviction be made on the charge of negligent driving as a double collision occurred as the result of it. Defendant, who had cut the corner badly, sheered to one side to avoid a'car and collided with a tram. Another motor car approaching was obliged to swing to the right and in doing so, smashed a bicycle. The brakes on the lorry were not in order when examined by the police. Shanks was convicted and fined £4, court costs 22/-. Convictions were entered against the following for failing to produce their motor licenses when called-upon to do so by the traffic inspector: W. J. Hurst, fined 10/-, court costs 10/-; Mitchell Mackenzie, fined 10/-, costs 10/-; Francis Newton, fined 10/-, costs 12/-; William Bulling, fined 10/-, costs 12/-; Michael Flinn, fined 10/-, costs 12/-; Charles Jennings, fined 5/-, costs 10/-; A. C. McLaughlan fined 10/-, costs 10/-; James Casey, fined 10/-, costs 10/-; Cecil Clarke fined 10/-, costs 10/-; Gordon Diamond fined 10/-, costs 10/-; Walter F. White, costs 10/-; Archibald C. Sim, fined 5/-, costs 10/-; William Johnston fined 5/-, costs 10/-; Arthur Poole fined 10/-, costs 10/-; Harry Royds, fined 10/-, costs 10/-. For disobedience of an Invercargill maintenance order of May 1923, Reginald Shields was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, warrant not to be issued if he. pays the arrears (£1 10/-) forthwith. Andrew Lee was granted a cancellation of the arrears of his maintenance order amounting to £4 5/-. For disobedience of an Invercargill main tenance order of March, 1924, James George Wakefield was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, warrant not to be issued if he pay £l7 6/8 forthwith. Thomas Fahey for exposing sheep affected with lice for sale at Wallacetown, was fin,ed 10/-, costs 12/-. On a similar charge, Thomas O’Connor was ordered to pay costs 12/-.
