INADEQUATE WATER

PROTEST FROM UNDERWRITERS. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE COMMITTEE SET UP. A letter was received by the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce a fortnight ago from the Otago and Southland Underwriters’ Association in reference to the inadequate water supply in the business area of the town, and subsequent lack of facilities in dealing with outbreaks of fire. In view of the possible rise in insurance premiums a committee consisting of the president (Mr J. H. Reed), Mr C. Bradfield and two other members has been set up to go into the question and submit a report to the next meeting. The question was not discussed at Thursday night’s meeting, the president stating that he would prefer a full inquiry by the committee appointed before bringing the question before members. It is understood that the present water facilities in the city area, require a thorough overhaul, though the actual facts of the case are not to hand.
