OBITUARY

MRS JOHN PETERSON, SENIOR. The death occurred at Athol on Monday, March 19, of Mro Peterson, widow of the late John Peterson and one of the oldest residents of the district. Deceased, who had reached the age of 80 years the day before her death, was born at Durham, England, coming to New Zealand 54 years ago in the ship Alumbagh, and landing at Auckland on August 18, 1875. Subsequently she came to Dunedin and later to Invercargill where she married. Two years later, with her husband, she removed to Athol taking up residence at Mount Borak which was then a gold field of some importance. After a few years they removed to Athol township where she remained until her death, respected and loved by all who knew her. The late Mr and Mrs Peterson were the first couple to be married in All Sainte Ghurch, Gladstone, on August 27, 1878, the minister in charge then being the Rev. Knowles. She leaves a family of four sons, Messrs Charles, John, George and Henry Peterson, all of Athol, and Mrs C. Harvey of Athol. Mr Peterson died 26 years ago.
