FIRE AT OTAUTAU

BUILDINGS AND HOTEL DESTROYED. A disastrous fire occurred at Otautau between two and three o’clock yesterday morning. It started in the block known as Gallagher’s buildings, and fanned by the strong wind quickly reduced these to ashes. The buildings were occupied by Messrs O. Gallagher (fruiterer) and G. Sinclair (chemist). It next spread to Mrs Keith’s hotel, and left nothing but the bricks standing. The building was full of boarders at the time, but everyone escaped. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The insurances are not available, but it is known that Mrs Keith and Mr Sinclair are particularly heavy losers, as very little was saved.
