BRITISH BOYS
IMMIGRANTS ARRIVE REMUERA BRINGS FRESH QUOTA CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHEME (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 12. The liner Remuera, which arrived from Southampton last night, brought 30 boys coming to New Zealand under the Church of England settlement scheme in charge of the Rev. F. Harty, of Frankton Junction. Owing to the operation of winter restrictions on immigration, there were only 79 general immigrants. Of the total 109 boys and general immigrants, 54 are for Auckland, 21 for Wellington, 11 for New Plymouth, 3 for Greymouth, 5 each for Lyttelton and Timaru, 4 for Dunedin, 2 for Bluff and one for Gisborne. At Bishopscourt this afternoon, eleven of the boys were confirmed by Archbishop Averill, after which the party was entertained at tea. During the voyage, one of the boys, Reginald Burchell, was operated upon for an internal abscess by Dr. W. J. H. Hislop, of Wellington, who was returning from a holiday abroad, assisted by Dr. D. Watson, ship’s surgeon, and nurse K. Shorter, a passenger. The operating theatre and table were improvised in the third class men’s wash-house which was thoroughly sterilised. The ship was run dead slow during the period of the operation, two hours 40 minutes, to eliminate vibration. The patient made a wonderful recovery and when the ship arrived at Auckland, was able to sit up in bed. However, his condition was such as to necessitate his removal to the hospital for after treatment. The third wireless operator, Geoffrey Hulbert, developed acute appendicitis last Friday and again Dr Hislop assisted by Dr. Watson and Nurse L. Aston, operated successfully under the same circumstances, the time occupied being one hour forty minutes.
