BASKETBALL

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the Executive of the Southland Basketball Association was held last night in the Technical College building, Mrs R. S. Mclnnes presiding. There were also present, Miss Pay (vice-president) and representatives from Collegiate, High School, Pirates, St. Peter’s, Waikiwi, and St. John’s Apologies for absence were received from Miss White (secretary), and from representatives from Technical College and Makarewa. The process of raising funds to send a representative team to Wellington was further discussed. It was decided that the idea of Euchre Parties be abandoned, but that the suggestion that a dance be held, be considered. It was decided that the Basketball tournament to be held on June 3, should be run on the same lines as the tournament of the previous year, that the matches should begin at 9 a.m. on that day, and that names of teams must be entered by May 27. It was further decided that 2/6 be the entrance fee for outside teams, and that one shilling be the entrance fee for registered teams. It was proposed and seconded that the tournament be divided into two grades senior and junior, the final arranging of the teams to be left in the hands of the committee appointed. The following committee was appointed to take charge of the tournament:—Misses G. Basstian, L. Strathearn, and Paton. It was decided that the High School courts be the official ones for the tournament and that Southend courts be used if necessary. The motion that the matches in the Tournament consist of two seven minute spells with one minute rest was carried unanimously. It was decided that should the weather in June be unfavourable, arrangements should be made to play matches in the Drill Hall. It was proposed by Mrs Mclnnes and seconded by Miss Strathearn, that the Southland Representative costume should consist of a maroon flannel tunic over a tussore blouse, with black stockings and white shoes. The question of providing a suitable “blue” for representative players was discussed, and it was decided that a brooch with ribbon and bars should be obtained if the price were at all reasonable. It was decided that the next meeting of the association be held on June 10.
