WYNDHAM NOTES

ATHENAEUM MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) A meeting of the committee of the Wyndham Athenaeum (Incorporated) was held on Thursday evening in the Athenaeum buildings, the president (Mr C. E. Davey) presiding over a good attendance of members. The secretary’s action in affiliating with the Public Libraries’ Association was approved of on the motion of Mrs Davey and Miss Irvine. In reference to the clock which was donated to the athenaeum by the trustees in the estate of the late J. H. Henry, it was decided that the repairs of same be held over until a later date. In regard to the sale of the gold watch, the action by which it had been disposed of was approved. Accounts amounting to £5l 4/1 were passed for payment. The secretary reported that 170 new books had been placed on the shelves since August 1, 1927, and that the present number of subscribers on the roll was 50. The librarian’s (Mr A. C. Hutton-Potts) action in allowing only one book to be in the possession of a subscriber at a time was approved of. In adopting this procedure it was giving every subscriber an opportunity of securing a new book. It was decided that the library be opened for one hour on Wednesday evenings, between the hours of 7 and 8 o’clock, so as to give local subscribers an opportunity of changing books during the week. After a short discussion regarding the purchase of linoleum for the athenaeum it was finally decided to purchase this at the earliest opportunity and that the cost of same be paid out of the general account, this amount to be repaid out of the proceeds of the next concert. It was resolved on the motion of Messrs Pauli and C. E. Davey that a minute of appreciation be placed on record for the work being carried out by the secretary (Mr L. Harley). This gentleman had spent a considerable amount of his time in arranging the books on the new shelves and clearing up, his efforts being very much appreciated by the members of the institution. Some considerable time ago the committee decided to carry out extensive alterations to the interior of the building and this has now been completed, and from a library point of view is a great improvement. The building originally consisted of two compartments, a library and a reading room, the latter being instituted that it might be available for the use of meetings, etc. It was however found that this room could not be economically run, and as the yearly addition of books led to congestion the overflow from the library had to be accommodated in the reading room, which was not satisfactory because while in this room the books were not under proper control. This difficulty has now been overcome by the removal of the partition between the two rooms, making one large commodious room of the two. The fireplace which was in the middle of the partition has been removed altogether and two electric heaters have been installed in its stead; the introduction of these will no doubt account for the charge for the surplus of unused current, and so do away with the cost and trouble of stoking coal fires. GOLF (LADIES’ CLUB). The following is the draw for the Junior grade which will play a nine-hole round on the local links on Saturday afternoon. The scores will count for the ringer competition —Mesdames Rowe and Walker, Mesdames Ball and Kerse, Mesdames Giller and Robertson, Miss Hunter and Mrs Harley, Misses Wright and Richardson, Mrs De la Mare and Miss Bogues, Mrs Carson a bye. SCOTTISH SOCIETY. At a meeting of the committee of the Wyndham and District St. Andrews Scottish Society on Saturday evening it was decided that the societies’ competitions which were postponed from last year be held at Wyndham on June 10. The entries for this event close with the secretary (Mr J. Black) on June 8 at 8 p.m. FOOTBALL. The following team will represent Wyndham in a match to be played against Waimahaka on the local grounds on Saturday afternoon—Macpherson, Milne W., Milne V., Barnett, Jones, Nicholson, Richardson, R. Milne, W. Boyle, G. Martin, J. Rabbidge, A. Gregory, J. Dodd, Lindsay, and H. Grace.
