FAST STEAMERS
ME CONNOLLY’S SCHEME NOT REGARDED AS PRACTICABLE A NEWSPAPER OPINION (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) FASTER STEAMERS LITTLE HOPE FOR MR. CONNOLLY’S SCHEME. NEWSPAPER’S OPINIONS. (Rec. 5.5 pan.) London, October 29. Fairplay, commenting on Mr, Connolly’s fast ship scheme, states: “While there is no question that such ships could be designed and built, it is most doubtful whether, even with mail subsidies, the business offering would be sufficient to justify the venture. To suggest the Imperial Government should confine the shipment of migrants to the New and Commonwealth lines is absurd, as imagine existing lines calmly and without protest allowing all refrigerated cargo to be offered in the first instance to a New fine. Judging by the Imperial Shipping Committee’s report of 1923, there is not much chance of the contemplated steamers ever being built. A close study of the report indicates that the proposed service could not obtain a profit on the terms obtainable. What the Australian exporters want is faster steamers combined with lower freights.”—A. and N.Z.
