THEFT OF LETTERS

YOUTH BEFORE COURT. TWO YEARS IN THE BORSTAL. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, October 22. Maffen James Lovatt Fraser, aged 18, who pleaded guilty to seven charges of theft of postal packets of the value of £lO 18/- while employed at Ohakune, was sentenced by Mr Justice Reed in the Supreme Court to two years in the Borstal. His Honour said it was quite impossible in cases like this to grant probation. Endless trouble might be caused by the theft of letters. Although, it was always painful to see a youth on the threshold of life ruin his career, there was a duty to be performed to the public.
