U-BOAT CAMPAIGN

NORWEGIAN WHO HELPED BAIDS ON IRISH COAST, (Sun Special.) LONDON, June 15. An echo of the German submarine campaign was heard at Ballina, Co. Mayo, Ireland, when Mr Bingham, the owner of a whaling station on the coast, claimed £5700 for damages caused by the enemy. Mr Bingham gave evidence that a Norwegian named Ammundsen successfully carried on the industry till 1916,. when he sold his boats to British owners. Amin undsen then entered the German navy, and in consequence of his knowledge of the Irish coast, was appointed to command a submarine.

In this boat he did immense destruction to coastal traffic. While returning to Germany his submarine was destroyed. Mayo fishermen, in evidence, said that Ammundsen was a cruel and crafty man, and that he left Ireland without paying his bills.
