AT WEMBLEY

STEER ROPING CONTESTS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LGNDON, June 18. Private steer roping contests are being continued at Wembley. A galloping steer, when roped, turned a somersault and broke its neck and died instantly. The police and representatives of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were present. A number of members of the House of Commons and others have asked permission to watch the contests in view of pending police Court proceedings. Permission, so far. has been refused. The Duchess of Hamilton and the Marchioness of Graham, noted sportswomen, were amongst the early morning spectators, and were most impressed by the skill of the cowboys, but refused to discuss the incidents which are causing so much comment.
