MORE SPLIT BANKNOTES. CIRCUIATION IN CHRISTCHURCH (Special to the Times). CHRISTCHURCH, June 19. Split banknotes are being circulated in Christchurch. During the last few days several casee have been reported, and it is evident that a gang is operating throughout New Zealand, for cases have occurred in several North Island towns, including Auckland and Wellington. As a result, the business people in this city are keeping a sharp watch on their currency. On Tuesday evening, a butchery firm, when totalling up the day’s receipts, discovered that two valueless notes had been received, and on the same evening a note that showed similar signs of “doctoring” was found amongst the day’s takings of a local fruit and confectionery establishment. The split notes resemble in many respects the genuine note, but the back is absolutely blank. The notes that are circulating in Christchurch are covered with a brown paper on one side so as to make them up to the usual thickness.
