FREE TRADE PRINCIPLES
IMPERIAL PREFERENCE AN ENCROACHMENT. INFRINGEMENT NOTED. (By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, February' 17. (Received February 17, 7.5 p.m.) Mr R. L. Beauchamp, on behalf of the Free Trade Union, and Lord Sheffield on behalf of the Cobden Club, made a joint statement drawing attention to the disquieting fact that some Free Traders do not appear to realise that Imperial Preference is in effect Protection accorded to subjects of the Empire at the expense of the taxpayers of the United Kingdom. They state that Preference, while reducing revenue, affords no relief to the consumer on the goods accorded preferential treatment. Already this process has resulted in £1,500,000 being transferred from the pockets of the sugar consumers to the pockets of Colonial sugar producers, instead of to the Treasury. The infringement of the principles of Free Trade has already created vested interests at home in the Empire abroad.
