THE PHILIPPINES
REQUEST FOR INDEPENDENCE. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) WASHINGTON, December 15. (Received December 16, 11.30 p.m.) The Philippine request for independence was presented for the first time to the Coolidge Administration. The mission presented the resolutions adopted by the Philippine Legislature asking for the recall of the Governor (General Wood), for the fulfilment of the decree of autonomy guaranteed under the Jones Act for the final determination of the form of the Government for the islands.
President Coolidge, under advice, made no statement. Prior to the conference, the President let it be known that the Administration was firmly behind Governor Wood and that it was in favour of complete autonomy as soon as the United States was assured that the people were entirely capable of self-government.
