WORK & WAGES

REFUSAL TO WORK OVERTIME. WATERSIDERS FINED. (Per United Press Association), WELLINGTON, June 14. The late arrival of the ferry steamer M&raroa at Wellington on Saturday, April 14, made it necessary for the Wellington waterside workers to be asked to work overtime after 5 p.m., and their refusal to do so resulted in the Labour Department proceeding against a number of coal and cargo workers for recovery of a penalty for breach of award. The case of one member was taken as a test. Mr Page, S.M., in delivering judgment to-day, said he felt there was a breach of section 110 of the Act, and a breach of the award. A penalty of £1 was imposed in each case.
