MR H. G. WELLS LABOUR CANDIDATE FOR. LONDON UNIVERSITY (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright). (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, October 7. Mr H. G. Wells, in asknowledging his selection as Parliamentary Labour candidate for Ixindon University at the general election, which seat Mr Sidney Webb unsuccessfully contested as a Labour candidate in 1918, said the Labour Party was meant not merely for the working classes but for every sort of productive effort and service. The University representative should make it his duty to see that education was not cheapened or sweated. He never saw a guardsman dressed in his finery without feeling that he was dressed in stolen pens, stationery, and the impaired mental health of poor kiddies. They wanted the Nation’s affairs managed not by whispers in bankers’ parlours but by plain speeches in the professional chair. LONDON HOSPITALS. APPEAL FOR FUNDS. LONDON, October 0. Thirty thousand flag tellers responded to the Prince of Wales’s appeal to raise £lOO,OOO in aid of London Hospitals. Fetes and quaint pageants have been arranged by Hospital students and nurses, while Vaux- ■ hall Gardens have been transformed into a I replica of the Vauxhail of a century ago. THE BEVAN CASE. AFFAIRS OF CITY EQUITABLE. LONDON, October 6. 'Received October 8, 5.5 p.m.) David Macßeth Milligun gave evidence in the Bevan case that at a board meeting of the Qty Equitable at. which three directors threatened to resign failing investigation of the company’s affairs, Bevan exclaimed, “You are not going to give me a stab in the back like that, are you?” The meeting appointed a receiver. Bevan was asked to leave the chair and the room. The Magistrate intimated that he intended to send the case to trial. BANKRUPTCY PETITIONS. INCREASE IN ENGLAND AND WALES. LONDON, October 7. (Received October 8,5 A p.m.) There were 3470 bankruptcies in England and Wales for the nine months ended September, being 1016 above the number in the same period of last year, and 2438 above 1920.
