A SWEEPSTAKE
THREE PROMOTERS FINED (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 5. When three yung men pleaded guilty at the Police Court to a charge of having conducted a sweepstake on the Manger* Handicap, a solicitor stated that his client only deducted 2/6 for himself from the stakes, the balance going to the winner of the sweep. “It is small matter very frequently in’ dulged in on racecourses, but it is against the law and people must be made to know it,” said Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M. Chief Detective MclUveney: The penalty is up to £2OO. Some people go from racecourse to racecourse and make a good thing out of it. Advertisements are put in papers by racing clubs stating this sort of thing is not allowed and that those offending will be put off the course and prosecuted, so that these people know the risk they run. Mr Poynton: They should all know the risk they run. Some day an offender will be fined the full penalty of £2OO. People must remember that this is against the law. If they break the law in small things unchecked they will be liable to defy it in bigger things. . gasb vss feed (
