THE ANGLICAN PRIMACY
A NEW TITLE ARCHBISHOPRIC CREATED (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 5. The Anglican general Synod carried a bill altering the title of the Primate of New Zealand to Primate and Archbishop. The bill originally proposed only Archbishop, but was amended in the committee stages. The mover, Bishop Sadlier, stated that New Zealand was the only province of the Church in the Empire which adopted the historical and traditional title. A.few members opposed the bill on the ground that by adopting too many titles the Church would be in danger of losing touch with the people. Bishop Julius said that a similar proposal was made previously, when he opposed it. The position of the Primate was not one that lifted the presiding Bishop very far above his fellows and he had a fancy that archbishops had a habit of giving themselves airs. He wanted to retain the very friendly relations that now existed. He remembered saying in 1910 that what was thought good enough for Bishop Selwyn, was good enough for them. His opinions were the same today. He would vote against the bill. The title operates immediately.
