ATLANTIC SALMON

FISH FROM WAIAU RIVER IDENTIFIED A SUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENT. (Special to the Times). WELLINGTON, March 30. The chief inspector of fisheries has reported to the Minister for Marine (Mr Anderson), that an Atlantic salmon weighing 6slbs., which was caught in the Waiau River, Southland, has been identified definitely. Some years ago the Marine Department imported several shipments of Atlantic salmon ova, and the fry were liberated in the Waiau River. The success of the experiment remained in doubt for a long time, but there is no doubt now that the Atlantic salmon has been acclimatised. The fishing experts anticipate that before long there will be large numbers of the fish running in the Waiau.
