EXHIBITION SKETCHES OF ANZAC

ttJ.Z. RETURNED SOLDIERS' FUND. To a New Zealand soMler-artlst, Sapper Moore-Jones, the dominion is indebted for a fine collection of historical records in water colour sketches of Gallipoli. These will be exhibited for a brief period in this city at the Victoria Hall, commencing this evening. On a ■visit to England when war broke out, Horace Moore-Jones enlisted and joined the New Zealand Engineers, and was present at the great landing on April 25, 1915. While in the trenches, Sapper Moore-Jones began his sketches, and their value being recognised by his officer, he was ordered to report at headquarters, and immediately detailed off to sketch the enemy positions for General Birdwood. It was exceedingly dangerous work, and the Turkish snipers gave him little peace. However, a slight wound on the hand was the only result of their attentions; but general 111-health resulted in the sapper being invalided to England, which terminated a. stay of eight months in Gallipoli. After a lengthy stay in a Birmingham hospital, the soldier-artist completed his sketches, and by instructions from the military authorities, and arrangement with the New Zealand Government through the High Commissioner (Sir Thomas the collection was placed on exhibition at the New Zealand Government offices in the Strand, where it attracted wide attention, and was visited by thousands of people from all parts of England. The pictures were also hung at Buckingham Palace by Hoyal Command for the private inspection of the King and Hoyal Family. The exhibition will be opened this evening at 7.45 by his Worship the Mayor (Mr D. McFarlanei, and on and after Tuesday will be open daily from 11 a.m. till n p.m. and from 7.50 to 10 p.m. Lectures will be given at 5 and 7.4 5 p.m. each day by Sapper Moore-.!ones. The proceeds of the exhibition is for the beneAt of N.Z. Returned Soldiers’ Fund.
