WAITAKI DAIRY COMPANY

FIRST SEASON’S RESULTS. The potentialities of Southland are Again evidenced by the results of the IWaitaki Dairy Company’s first few (months' working, and some figures given to a press representative verify the contention that Southland can put up records. We frequently hear of the wonderful North, but it may be claimed that our province presents the best openings Tor enterprise of any part of New Zealand. Before the Waltaki Company started. Southland exported very little, if any, butter, and the North had to be drawn on for supplies for our local markets far the greater part of the year. Beginning, in the spring of this season with a few suppliers, the Waltaki Company soon increased its connection and outpnt of butter until at the end of January over 450 farmers were sending an cream. One hundred and sixty tons of blitter were manufactured; and, after supplying local requirements, considerably over 100 tons were sent away for export, the average value of a ton of butter being £ISO, the total value of the (Company's output up to the end of Jan. .was £28,800. Their output for December and January was of higher value than any other butter or cheese factory in (Southland and fourth highest for the South Island. The largest amount of butter made on any one day was 57S81bs. The management regard their operations for the first season as of an Introductory nature, and estimate that there will be considerable Increase in the amount of butter produced from year to year. The Company’s supplies come largely from farmers on bush farms and others who were making butter at home. These farmers have readily adopted the new system of working and will continue to increase their herds as their land is cleared, and it is safe to predict that the production of butter will in a very short time hold an important position among Southland’s leading products.
