A U STKALAS lAN Cl 1A 31 PIG N S HIP. The draughts tournament in which tho championship of Australasia is to be decided commenced at Invercargill yesterday. There are twenty competitors—fifteen being in the handicap and five in the championship games. The play throughout the day and evening was interesting and some very close finishes wore recorded. Many well known draughtsmen were at the tournament as spectators, and a continuous flow'of people dropped in for brief periods. The championship carries with it a handsome- sil - ver cup presented by Messrs Speight and Co. The first game in the, championship series cHelliker v. Caldervvood l occupied three, hours and was the most interesting game of tho day. The results arc as follow; — CJIA3IPIONSHIP. Holliker (Dunedin) v. Caldervvood (Auckland): Caldervvood won, 1 game and drew 3, Erickson (Wellington) v. 3lorrison (Tuatupere), 3 games drawn. Boreliam (Dunedin), a live. , HANDICAPS. Shadholt 3; Hart 1; Adcock J; L. .Morris 3; 3!uir It: J. Rea 4: Bolting' 3: K. 31orris 3; Young 3; Mcldrum 1: Ellis It; 31angau It; Cameron 31; Hutchins I. One round of this series has been completed and a start had just been made on the second round. The tournament will be continued to-day and it is expected that some interesting games will take place.
