BELGIUM DAY
LUMSDEN SCHOOL. (From Our Own Correspondent). “Belgium Day” in Lumsden school was taken up most energetically by the pupils. Flowers, fruit and vegetables, besides articles of household utility were on stile at many points of the township and most of the juvenile traders seemed to do good business. Even a shoe-black brigade. the members of which were to he seen at several points of vantage, put in a good day’s work - . 31any of the pupils did farm work of various kinds, others took- up rabbiting while many girls hired themselves out for a day’s domestic work, in all eases handing over to the fund the proceeds of their labour. The fact that sale day fell upon the holiday was an advantage eagerly seized, and 31 r YV. E. Taylor, the genial auctioneer of tho N. 31, and A. co„ most generously gave his assistance to dispose of the live stock and the, doll <a large and handsome one. dressed as a Red Cross nurse), given by or on bchalt of the pupils of the school. 31 r YVm. Burke, of Five Rivers, presented a sheep on behalf of his two girls, as did also Mr D. Cuningham and Mr R. Taylor, while Mr W. H. Ward, of Castlerock, was the donor on behalf of Holmesdale school of the lamb which realised £1 3s. Other live stock included fowls and ducks from pupils of the school, Elsie Small, A. J. Johnson, P. Key and F. Robertson, a pair of white rabbits from Stanley Tovvnson, and a turkey, the gift of 31 r Clearwater. The doll, which realised about £lO, was tho gift of Mrs R. W. Edgar, while a picture, the gift of 3lrs Cantrell, biougbt in l something like 30s. One of the puichasers” of the doll omitted from Hie list in the Times of 27th was Mr John MeFetridge. whose “bid," £1 lis od. is here duly recorded. Tea was provided on the grounds under the direction of Mrs McArthur, whose many assistants, adult and juvonilo were kept very all the afternoon, and added £4 to tintotal Altogether from the work and sales of the children and other sources the sum of £3l 14s 9%d was realised, to•'other with £1 Ss for Mr YVard s lamb, which amount belongs to the sum raised by the pupils of Ilolmcsdale school, between £7 and 8.
