Mr A. S. Malcolm, M.P. for Clntha, was in town yesterday and will return north this afternoon. The Very Rev. Father Lynch, of Wray's Bush, was the recipient of several presents and a complimentary social on the occasion of the jubilee of his priesthood. The Rev. Father O’Neill, of Winton, wa.s similarly honoured by his people and received an address and purse of sovereigns. It is the intention of tho Catholics of the Riverton Parish to cojnmemorate the jubilee of Father Murphy to the priesthood on Wednesday, June 24, in a suitable manner. It is rather a coincidence that the three rev. gentlemen of Southland should have completed their twenty-five years’ service so close to ono another. Mr R. T. Stewart, of Dunedin, who was the contractor for the 20in. bore at the waterworks, it at present on a visit to Invercargill his purpose being to remove the plant used for the work referred to. Mrs Shaw, of Shrubsole. Kingston-on-Thames. England, has bequeathed six diamond and opal rings to Queen Mary, if she will graciousty accept them. A follow student writes that the experiment of the Prince of Wales studying at Oxford University as an ordinary undergraduate was entirely successful. He won everybody’s respect and admiration. It is understood that" Mr Wm. Saunders. of Otautau, lias been recommended bv the chairman of the Wallace Licensing Committee to fill the vacancy on the committee caused by the death of Mr .las. Adamson, of Orepuki. The Winton Record reports that the health of Mr Mark Shaw, a very old and highly-esteemed resident of Winton, is causing his friends much anxiety. Mr C. Mcßae, Braintra, Hokonui. will be a candidate for the Winton Riding of the Southland County Council. Sir Hartmann Wolfgang Just, K.C.M. G.. Assistant Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, who arrived at Bluff by the s.s. Matai yesterday, came on to Invercargill, and is staying at the Club Hotel. He will leave for Queenstown by the morning train to-day. Sir Joseph Ward arrived from the north by the second express yesterday and was met on arrival by a big party of gentlemen, at the head of whom were the Mayor, Mr D. McFarlane, and Mr W. B. Scandrett. In the course of a brief chat witii a Southland Times reporter Sir Joseph stated that he would not make definite arrangements as to his movements until to-day. It was his intention to deliver a political address somewhere in the south before returning to Wellington, hut it would not he in Invercargill or the surrounding district. He was not quite settled as to where it would be, iut it was probable'' that he would speak in Central Otago. Sir Joseph Ward met Sir Hartmann Just soon after his arrival, and is staying at the Club Hotel. Mr J. E. Watson, who is a member of the Inland Waterways Commission to report on the inland waterways of the Auckland province, returned to Invercargill last night. The other members of the commission are Messrs Wm. Ferguson, of Wellington, and Evan Parry, electrical engineer to the Public Works Department. The members of the commission travelled over the routes of the various proposed canals, one of which is to connect the Waitemata and the Manakau harbours and another to connect the Kaipura and Manakau harbours harbour. Another proposal is to improve the navigation of the Waikato river. Ktill another proposal is to connect the Ka.lpara and Manakau harbours with a canal from Hellonsville to Riverhead. The members of the commission also spent three days on the Waikato river travelling from Cambridge to the head, some time being devoted to the tributaries. Mr Watson has been absent for about three weeks. The commission decided to prepare plans for the machinery required for the work proposed, and it is probable that It will resume in December when the information required will be available
