FOREST FIRES

WHOLE TOWNS DESTROYED. SHOCKING LOSS OF LIFE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.) OTTAWA, July 12. The town of Cochrane, in the Porcupine mining district, has been destroyed by a bush fire which is still spreading. Settlers are fleeing from their homes. Rain only can save the Porcupine mining camp. Oscada, a small town in Michigan, has been wiped out by fire starting in stableyards. The flames spread to the adjoining settlement. The inhabitants escaped in a steamer, a relief train being wreckedf on the way to the rescue. It is unknown whether there are any fatalities. The forest fires endanger other towns. Thirty people have perished in the forest fires In Northen Ontario. The towns of Cochrane, South Porcupine, and Patsvllle have been destroyed, and Tisdale has been half destroyed. Kelso has been deserted, and the Inhabitants are seeking refuge in the streams. It is believed that the casulties will be several hundreds. NEW YORK, July 12. Terrific forest fires are raging In Northern Michigan. The twin towns of Aosable and Oscada have been wiped out. and at least 75 people have perished wlille 1800 are homeless. The damage so far is estimated at a million sterling.
