The first lest took place this evening. The weather was fine and a very large number of people gathered in the beautiful grounds of the Jockey Club. B grade bands, of which there were ten. played first, their piece being “Belle of Brittany.”, The Nelson Band topped tiie list with 125 points, Wanganui City being next with 124, and Gisborne City third with 119. Others were placed as follows Cambridge 118, Wellington Tramways 11T, Waitara 115, Blenheim 108, Feilding 105, Manaia 102, Opunake 90. The Judge said that Nelson had put up an excellent performance. The first grade, contest between Wanganui Garrison and Petone proved a very easy tiling for the clmmpions t who, in the language of the .iudge, put up a very fine performance, while Petone came in for rather unfavourable criticism. Wanganui scored 120 points, and Petone 76. The test piece was “Liszt.”

This morning side drum solos were played with the following results : Donovan (Gisborne) S3. Hindley (Nelson), 7S ; Mexted (Blenheim), 75 ; Olliver (Cambridge), 73 ; Robinson (Manaia), 73. Tenor trombone solos resulted ; Walling (Petone), 114 ; Trownson (Wanganui Garrison), 109 ; Gray (Wanganui Garrison). 108 ; Sullivan (Nelson), 107 ; Levar (Wellington Tramways), 105 ; Humphrey (Wanganui City), 101 ; Weir (Manaia), 97 ; Hayblttle (Feilding), 96 ; Turncliff (Blenheim), 95 ; Douglas (Gisborne), 94.
