Sir,—l, with many other spectators at the Band Contest this afternoon, was disgusted to notice the presence of bookmakers. blatantly calling their “ odds.” To my mind this was a blot on an otherwise successfully managed contest, and I trust that others of your readers will take the matter up with the view of preventing ti similar nuisance ut

other gatherings where women and children congregate. If the betting element is to be obtruded at every gathering the sympathy of the public will be speedily alienated, and true sport will certainly suffer.—l am, etc.. REGINALD DAY. 3rd May.
