Mrs Drake, found guilty at the previous criminal sessions of the manslaughter of her child, Dorothy, was to-day sentenced by Judge Edwards to six years’ imprisonment.' Evidence was; called its to character, and counsel pleaded for a light sentence on the ground that death was caused in an outburst of passion, and not because of malice. .(In this case, Mrs Drake, Otaki, was found to have been guilty of persistent cruelty towards Dorothy, a particularly sweet little girl, who was covered with bruises, and finally succumbed to a flogging of a shocking and frightful nature. The body of the child was so covered with bruises that it was scarcely possible to put a sixpence between them.)
