The burghers in the Eastern Orange River Colony are satislied with the new order of things. Few objections are made as to English being the medium of instruction in the schools, parents being anxious that their children should learn the English language.

The presen.‘e of I these gentlemen shows that Southland , occupies a position of interest and r.nI portance in the domain of agriculture, I and it is satisfactory to know that the visitors are exceedingly pleased with the quality of the stock shown and the all round excellence of the show.

The High Schools will break up tomorrow night. The ceremony will be held this year in the gymnasium, and it may be anticipated that that large building will be filled by the parents and friends of pupils and others interested in the schools. Besides the distribution of prizes for success in school work, there will be the distribution of the trophies won at the school sports. Both sides of the training given by the school-—schol-arship and sport-will therefore be brought into prominence. There will be a few short speeches, and altogether the gathering should be of a very interesting character.

Arrangements have been made for any of the members of the Southland Rifle Club wishing to shoot to-day to fire at the seven hundred yards range with the Oretis. An endeavour may also be made to finish the competition, for Mr R. J. Roach’s trophy if the competitors interested are able to attend.

The quarterly meeting of the Invercargill Licensing Committee was held in the S.M. Court on Monday, there being on the bench Messrs S. E. McCarthy, S.M., chairman, J. Anderson, T. Findlay, J. S.
