WEST PLAINS.
The spinsters of this district do things in style, and the popularity of their annual ball, held on the Bth inst., was proved by the fact that some of those lucky enough to be invited travelled all the way from Wyndham, Roslyn, Tisbury, Grove Bush, Wright’s Bush, and other parts of Southland. The hall was decorated in a manner that reflected credit on the fair workers 5 the floor was in tiptop order; Mr Edwards and Miss Peters were the musicians, and one enthusiastic dancer declared that their music was beautiful; as for the catering, which had been entrusted to Mr Thomson, East Road, it was pronounced “ simply lovely ” by one of the ladies, and her verdict was generally endorsed. Miss Hynes made a most engaging Mistress of Ceremonies till midnight, when Mr J. Pord took up the running, and if he has any doubt as to how he acquitted himself, he may be relieved to learn that one of the charming hostesses was heard to say that he kept time to the tick. Miss Leonard was an ideal secretary —indeed the ladies one and all were hospitality personified, and they richly deserved the three cheers for the spinsters with which a most happy gathering ended somewhere in the neighbourhood of daylight on the following morning.
