OTAUTAU NOTES.

Very little is spoken of here but the weather atv present, which is deplorable, and the forthcoming general and County Council elections. We have had three days of snow already, which, to say the least, is decidedly depressing to our poor farmers and sheep-raisers, and brings to mind a saying often on the lips of an old sailor I once knew. When anyone remarked to him on bad, unseasonable weather, his answer invariably was —‘Yes, some o’ you must er done samraat to offend the A’mighty.’ In this case the farmers are suffering heavily for their Jonah. In spite of the recent heavy floods the Town Board’s embankment, though in an unfinished state, stood the strain splendidly, and so in future floods will no longer be a threatened danger to our township.

A few enthusiasts have commenced playing tennis, but this weather will put things back again. The Tennis Club held a ball a short time ago, which was a great success. Mr Grilfedder, addressed the electors here last Saturday night, and had a good reception. The gentleman is also a candidate for the Orepuki Riding at the forthcoming Wallace County Council election. Mr Thomson is to hold a

meeting' here on Saturday night, so we are in the thick of politics. Prohibition is, here, as elsewhere, a burning question. There is quite an active warfare between enthusiastic Prohibitionists and certain interested parties on the other side. Dame Humour bias it that next court day here will be a lively one in consequence. October 29th.
