CRICKET.

[By Yorker.]

Owing to the unseasonable weather on Wednesday, cricketers had to indulge in net practice, and good form was shown by the majority. The members of the various clubs appear to be taking great interest in the game, and each fine evening a large number of players avail themselves of the opportunity of getting as much practice as possible. During the past week Mr Keane, the coach, has put in a great amount of work on the Star ground, which is looking better now than it has for some time past. As the matches will soon commence, and the Invercargill ground having been abandoned, another ground will have to be obtained, as the Appleby ground is unfit to play a match on. It is a pity that this club when entering the senior ranks did not obtain a ground that coaid be made suitable for senior matches. Already some of the Star 0. 0. have shown decided improvement under Mr Keane’s tuition, and I would like to see junior and school clubs arrange with the Association to obtain his services, as they contain some promising players, who would benefit greatly by his instruction, which is given with pleasure. I hear that the Star club intend sending teams to Mataura and Riverton on November 10th. This is a step in the right direction, as these matches infuse interest into country cricket, and I hope that on every opportunity matches will be arranged with the country teams. Senior matches started in Dunedin last Saturday, but owing to bad weather the bowlers had the advantage. A. Carver, an old Southland player, playing for the Dunedin club against Port Chalmers, obtained 7 wickets for 13 runs, and scored 19 (not out). At the annual meeting of the Southland Cricket Association, held on Wednesday evening in the Albion Hotel, the following were elected office-bearers for the ensuing year: — President, Mr A. Cross ; Vice-Presi-dents, Dr Thomson (Arrowtown) and Messrs C. Kingsland, A. Ball, I. W. Raymond, and A. P. Hawke ; Secretary, Mr J. Aspray ; Treasurer, Mr W. C. Harrison ; General Committee . Messrs G. G. Burnes, C. G. Wilson, G. A. Turner, W. Sampson, A. Poole and W. Speirs ; Match Committee ; Messrs G. G. Barnes, C. G. Wilson, and A. Poole ; Delegate to N.Z. Council, Mr G. A. U. Tapper (Christchurch). I shall be glad to publish any notes of general interest on the game if left at this office before 10 a.m. on Thursdays.
