WESTERN DISTRICT NOTES.
Most of the grain carting is finished. I have just heard (writes our Nightcaps correspondent) that a certain traction engine has been testing some culverts ; result, more labour for the surfacemen and sawmillers. It seems absurd to give these people a license, which, I believe, only costs them about £4. It would be far better to cancel the license and make them pay for all damage done. Granting them a license frees them from a great amount of responsibility, at least I presume so. A large area of land is now ploughed and being ploughed in and around around this district, and it is to be hoped that the price of grain will be reasonable next year, so that those who are now speculating (for really such it is) will come out all right, as they deserve to do. There is now a keen demand for good dairy cows, but they are scarce. If our energetic member, Mr Gilfedder, would only get £SOO to make roads to the Beaumont settlers, they would remember him long and well.
