OTAUTAU OQINSSBuilding.—This trade promises to be brisk in Otautau shortly. Mr Sinclair of Nightcaps has the contract for the Wesleyan Church, Mr J. Swap the Anglican, and Mr R. Seattor for the erection of a shop and dwelling for Mr McNeill. The Railway Department is also erecting new cattle yards at the Otautau station. County Council. The recent floods will cost the Council dear. The damage; done to the Wrey’s Bush, Yellow Bluff, and Hamilton Burn bridges totals £6OO, a heavy drain on County finances. The Council has agreed to the expenditure of £2O as a subsidy to the protective works on the Otautau stream. £4O is estimated as the total cost. Volunteering. - The Wallace Mounted Rifles are proving themselves an able and enthusiastic corps. They Game out of their encampment with a credit balance of over £6. Great interest has been taken in the class-firing of the different sections which took place at the butts at the back of the town. Last Saturday Trqoper Church won the trophy presented by Mr Howarth, dentist, for attaining the highest score. Afternoon tea was taken up to the men by Mrs McPherson, assisted by Misses Chewing, Gilles and Saunders (2). Amusements. The Tennis Club poened here on 16th Jan. as soon as hte courts were in order, but unfortunately too late for much play this season. There is some talk of a tennis ball being held to help the club funds. Ping pong is also very popular at present, and several very successful parties have been given.
