SOUTHLAND Racing Club.
AUTUMN MEETING. The above Club have every reason to be satisfied with the patronage accorded them on Wednesday and Thursday. The attendance was excellent, and those who were present evidently meant business, as the money invested was a record for meetings at this time of the year — £4526 was put through against £2824 for the corresponding meeting last year. The stewards worked hard to make the meeting go, and they succeeded admirably in this respect. Mr R. Clark was the life of the races, and was always willing and obliging in the discharge of his duties. The stewards are to be commended for their action re Belligerent’s running in the Harvest and Autumn Handicaps, and the owner was lucky in getting off so easily. The racing was, on the whol'e, very interesting. The trots, as usual, were won very easily, the back horses not appearing to exert themselves very much when one of the limit riders got a fairly good start. Wild West ran well and keenly throughout the meeting, also Blackpool, who scored a popular win in the Winter Oats. Grleniti was the pick of the trotters present, and The Artist also trotted in fine style. Pipi accounted for both the ’Chases, and woo easily both days, fencing in beautiful style. The Earl won his tenth hurdle race on the second day, upsetting a big pot on Waikaia. Briny Breeze, with a capable rider up, made no error in the Hack Race, and should also have won the same race the previous day but for indifferent riding. The starting was fairly satisfactory, but after this meeting it is absolutely imperative that the Club should secure starting machines. The starting in the trots was by no means satisfacfactory, and it is a wonder the investors did not make a noise about Wild Bill being left at the post in the Mile Dash. To sum up, it was a real good meeting, well managed, and but for the cold weather would have been an ideal holiday for racing men.
