Mr W. B. Scandrett has the leasehold of two shops in Dee street for disposal. Mav Ist has been fixed for the hearing of the Southland bakers’ dispute by the Conciliation Board. The lease of Codfish Island will be submitted by Messi’s W. Todd and Co. in the Eialto this evening. The Borough of Avenal inserts resolutions passed at a recent meeting as to noxious weeds and the driving of vehicles. Meetings of householders for the election of school committees will be held at 7.30 p.m. on Monday. Members of the Southland Building Society are reminded that Tuesday is the last subscription day of the financial year. Payment for small birds’ eggs and heads will not be made by the Southland County Council after 4th May. Messrs J. A. Mitchell and Co. hold a clearing sale of dairy cows, horses, milk carts, etc., on Mr Adamson’s farm at Chatsworth on Wednesday next. The Sonoma, with the English mails via Frisco, reached Auckland ou Thursday evening. She was due on Monday, but was delayed through accidents to her engines. The Hon. J. G. Ward arrived from the North on Thursday, and leaves on Tuesday for Melbourne to take part in the opening of the Federal Parliament. He expects to be home again by the 23rd of May. The Agricultural Department has appointed inspectors of meat for the following freezing works :—Mr Bait at Belfast, Mr Lilieo at Timaru, Mr Cunningham at Mataura, Mr Kerrigan at Fairfield, and Mr Paterson at Ocean Beach, Bluff, Tbs National Mortgage and Agency Co. advertise the following sales in this issue ; Part of Mr J. Brss’s farm at Wallacetowa on Saturday, 27th inst; Messrs Tobin Bros, stock and implements at Forest Hill on Wednesday, Ist May; and the Ermedale Estate, Fairfax, on 27th April.
The Land Department intimate that a Bale will be held at the office, Invercargill on 22nd May of sections in Woodend and ITortrose townships, and that sections in Dacre township will be open for selection after Wednesday next.
At the last meeting of the Invercargill Eorough Council the abattoir inspector reported that during the fortnight ended 13th inst. 682 sheep, 117 cattle, 8 pigs, and 2 calves had been slaughtered, two cows and three sheep being condemned.
Acting in conjunction with Cornishmen in other parts of the Colony, those resident in Invercargill have formed a society, one object of which is to make a presentation to the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. Lists arc now open for signature with Mr Lindsay, Inspector of Factories, and the Secretary, Mr J. H. Kissell.
Mr C. Rodgers, of the Railway Bookstall, who is “ a chip of the old block ” so far as pushing business is concerned, is off to Melbourne by the Monowai on Tuesday next in connection with Duke of York novelties. Mr Rodgers, who has been dubbed “ The Novelty King ” by his acquaintances, has just obtained a number of copies of Borchgrevink’s new book, “First on the Antarctic Continent,” which is finding ready sale.
At the Supreme Court, Christchurch, before Mr Justice Denniston, Henry George Simms petitioned for divorce from his wife, Emma Simms, on the grounds of her adultery with Jas. C. Martin, ex-judge of the Supreme Court. Mr Hall, who appeared for the respondent and co-respondent, admitted the allegations contained in the petition and his Honour granted decree nisi, to be made absolute in three months —the co-respondent to pay costs on the highest scale.
We would draw the attention of our readers who are ou the look-out for handy farms to am advertisement appearing in thi ß issue regardin g the sale of Ermedale Estate by the National Mortgage and Agency Co. This estate comprises some of the best land situated in the Western District. Splendid crops of wheat, oats, turnips, and grass have been grown on these farms —in fact, one has just to look round at the prosperous farmers who hold land in that district to know that this is a sale that should be eagerly looked forward to and at which the bidding should be spirited. We trust to have the pleasure of publishing shortly the names of the purchasers of every section in the block.
