BLUFF NOTES.
Bluff has again settled down to its normal state after all the excitement of last week, with its opening ceremonies, banquet, etc, and we are getting along in the even tenor'of our way. Our next big day will be the annual regatta on January 2nd. His Worship the Mayor has started the ball rolling by convening meetings to elect a committee of management. Next week, commencing on Wednesday, sth December, the members of the local Primitive Methodist Church intend holding a bazaar. I might mention that there will be some very attractive young ladies as stall-holders, so my bachelor friends will require to bring plenty of cash with them, as a bazaar resembles our town clock, inasmuch as there is ‘no tick ’ there. One feature of the programme will be a grand march, the participants representing the nations of the world. More anon. On Monday, 26th inst., the Union Company’s magnificent vessel, the Moana, made her first visit to this port. She is undoubtedly the best passenger boat that has ever been here. It is a sure sign of the increasing traffic between New Zealand and the sister colonies, when the Company place such a vessel as the Moana in the trade. Captain Carey, the Company’s commodore, who was in command while the Moana was in the ’Frisco running, is still in charge, and received a hearty welcome on arrival from friends at this port. A highly esteemed resident of the Bluff, Mr B. Gr. East, left by the Westralia on Tuesday for South Africa to try his luck there. Prior to leaving Mr East was presented with a massive gold albert and pendant from his many friends here. Mr J. P, Roberts made the presentation, and spoke in a very eulogistic manner of the warm interest Mr East had always taken in the affairs of the Bluff. Mr East very feelingly responded. Mrs East’s good qualities as a friend and neighbour were also fittingly recognised by the presentation of a valuable gold chain, while her two daughters were the recipients of handsome gold brooches. Mr C. Leith made the presentations.
