The Farmstead.
CROP REPORTS. ‘ Please explain (asks a correspondent of the Toledo Blade) the object of the agricultural department at Washington in obtaining information concerning the condition ef crops throughout the United States. There is quite a large number of people who think that such information is gathered in the interests of of the trusts and monopolies. ’ These crop reports (replies the Blade) are gathered and printed for the benefit of the farmers themselves. A farmer who has ordinary intelligence keeps track of the condition of crops, for he knows that prices are largely controlled by the question of supply. Favourable crop reports generally depress the market price, while unfavourable ones raise prices. The crop reports enable a farmer to determine for himself when to sell, or whether to hold his grain. The Government entered on the work because it was asked for by the farmers, to make them less dependent on grain buyers.
