President McKinley has been re-elected, his maiority being larger than in 1896. Gore is to have a new Courthouse. The Salvation Army’s self-denial fund totalled £30,000, New Zealand heading the list with £8,740. James Scott, manager of the Skippers Sluicing Co., and M. Tobin and W. E. Lowe, miners, were accidentally killed in the mine on Wednesday. Arthur Blatch, alias Lilly white, has been arrested in Wellington and charged with the murder of Alfred Walch at Colchester, England, seven years ago. The accused declares that he was in America at the time of the alleged murder. Sub-Inspector Macdonell, Greymouth, has been raised to the rank of inspector. The Wallace County, one of Riverton’s oldest hostelries, was burned down the other morning. It was occupied by Mr Atkinson, and owned by Mr M. Instone. The Mokihinui coal mine, now owned by the N.Z. Government, is .vorked on the co-operative system. New Zealand white pine is in great demand in Sydney and Melbourne for butter boxes. Unless previously claimed, the following unclaimed property at the Invercargill police station will be sold on 19th November : —A silver watch, a Waterbury watch, four umbrellas, a swag, and sundries.
