THE POLLARDS.
The event of the week has, been the sojourn of Pollard’s Opera Company in our midst. The company arrived by the express on Monday last, and opened a brilliant season the same evening in the Theatre Royal. The first three operas staged were quite new to Invercargill theatre-goers, consequently “ The Belle of New York,” “ The Geisha,” and “ La Poupee ” were played to packed houses. Of the three, it is somewhat difficult to say to a nicety which was the most meritorious, but perhaps as an all-round success “ The Geisha ” will hold its own with either of its neighbours. The principals remain much the same as formerly. We noted that Miss May Beatty and Miss Campion, also Messrs Percy, Stephens, Quealy, and Fitts were hailed with great delight, and that our old friend “ The Insect ” is in as good form as ever. “ The Geisha ” is to be repeated at a matinee to-day, and to-night the season closes, as it opened, with “ The Belle of New York.”
