ASSASSINATION OF THE KING OF ITALY.
King Humbert, of Italy, was assassinated on Monday last. His assailant, an anarchist named Angelo Bressi, fired three shots at the king, and he died in a few minutes. The king was leaving a gymnasium at the time, and when standing up in bis carriage during the singing of the royal hymn Bressi stole up to him and fired almost point blank. The Queen, on hearing the news, declared that the murder was the greatest
crime of the century, and that her husband loved the people. King Humbert, who was born in 1844, took part in the war between Austria and Italy, and gained a name for valour. An attempt was made upon his life in 1878, but he escaped with a slight wound. The Government were warned on the 20th July that a plot was on foot to kill the King, and that four other sovereigns had also been condemned to death, but King Humbert countermanded the appointment of anditional guards. The German police have arrested an Italian anarchist for shouting out; — ‘ The Emperor of Germany’s turn next, after Humbert.’
