The Timaru Post states that last week seventy six bales of wool were brought, into Ashburton from the Alford Estate by the aid of the traction engine. * * * A conservatory and rose garden in Elmira, N.Y., is owned and managed by a woman. Young, M.R.C.V.S., who formany years has been inspector of byres under the Public Health Act, in the employment of Edinburgh Corporation, has been appointed veterinary inspector of the Government of New Zealand. * * * At last we are in a fair w«y to have a long-needed society, viz, the South Island Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Association, he first, meeting of which was held in Christchurch on 9th .November. Mr A. L. Myers occupied the chair, and delegates from the following Societies were present : Oamaru, Tim irn, Christchurch Rangiora, and Nelson. On the motion of Mr Stratz (Dunedin), seconded by Mr Elmond ( nve cargill), it whs decided that a Sofcaii Island Associntion be formed. The followb g officers were elected : —■ President, Mr G. A. Macquarie (Nelson) ; VicePresidents, Messrs J Lillico (Timaru), and S, S. Meyers (Dunedin) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr 8. C. Kesteven (Christchurch). Rules prepared by a sub committee were submitted to the meeting and adopted. The Association’s championship prizes will be £lO each, with a three years’ currency, the said prizes to be competed for at the smaller shows for two years, and every third year at one of the larger centres, where a grand championship exhibition will be held. A meeting for allowing the championship prizes is to be held in Christchurch during Easter week. Copies of rules will be sent to all the societies in the South Island, and they will be asked to notify their intention regarding affiliation, on or before 28th February, 1900.
